“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
2 Peter 3:18

Gracious Lord,
fill me to overflowing
consume me with Your fire

may You be all I desire.

More of You Lord,
may I continually seek
only Your precious name
let my lips honorably speak.

Growing ever, always, Lord,
in Your sweet grace
through knowledge and wisdom
let me humbly partake.

Always becoming more like You
less of me in all I do.

As I grow Lord,
teach me to love
milk that refreshes and
the meat of Your Word.

Gracious Lord,
lead me to Your well
where grace in abundance abides
draw me near to You
with only Your water that satisfies.

One day this last week I was researching an idea I felt God had given me to strengthen my walk with Him. As I researched a passage I have known all my life, I found out the meaning of it I grew up with is not what it actually means.

As I pondered this, I wrote about it on my Facebook status and one of the things I discovered through conversing about it in the comments is how God gives us an understanding of His Word for the time of life we are in. He helps us through situations in our Christian walk by giving us knowledge that can be applied to that time in our lives. Then, at a new time in our walk, He might enlighten us with that same verse in a new and different way to further our growth in Him.

It’s the whole idea of crawling before walking. First we have to learn to crawl, then stand, then finally move our feet and walk. Part of being a Christian is growing in Christ. Maturity.

How do we do this? Through reading God’s Word and prayer. Not just reading the Bible though but studying it, asking questions, and writing down what we learn. Praying for wisdom to understand what we are reading and the knowledge to know how to apply it to our lives.

As Matthew Henry says in his commentary on this verse: “And that we may avoid being led away, we must seek to grow in all grace, in faith, and virtue, and knowledge. Labour to know Christ more clearly, and more fully; to know him so as to be more like him, and to love him better. This is the knowledge of Christ, which the apostle Paul reached after, and desired to attain; and those who taste this effect of the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, will, upon receiving such grace from him, give thanks and praise him, and join in ascribing glory to him now, in the full assurance of doing the same hereafter, for ever.” ¹
May we continue to seek to know God more abundantly and fully in our lives that we may grow in His grace with all wisdom and understanding.
